Turn Radius

In most, older commercial restrooms this is the most common and hardest to fix problem. When you get into a restroom you are required to have a clear 60" diameter turn around area.

 

Lavatories and Faucets

Lavatories need a minimum clear space of 30" x 48" in front of the sink and a maximum height of 34". Under the sink you need to keep a minimum knee clearance of 27" from the floor to the bottom of the sink with a depth of 8". Toe clearance is a minimum of 9" high and 30" wide and extends a minimum of 17" from the front of the lavatory. Drain and Hot water-piping needs to be wrapped or configured to prevent contact.

Faucets are to be lever type or electronically activated. If the faucet has a lever handle they must have 5lb. maximum force to activate the controls. Faucets cannot require tight grasping pinching or twisting of the wrist. 

 

Toilets

There needs to be 48" clear space in front of the toilet. The center of the toilet should be 18" from the sidewall in an ADA compliant restroom. A 28" clear space should be provided form the toilet to any fixture. The top of the toilet seat should be 17" - 19" from the floor. The flush valve needs to be on the wide side of the toilet.

 

Grab Bars

The side grab bar is a minimum of 42" long and extends 24" in front of the toilet. The rear grab bar is a minimum of 36" long and is mounted a maximum of 6" from the corner of the wall on the toilet side.

The diameter of grab bars is 1 1/4" - 1 1/2". Clearance between the grab bar and the wall is 1 1/2". Grab bars are mounted at 33" from the floor to the center of the grab bar. Each grab bar needs to be able to hold 250 pounds.

 

Doors

The entry door the rest room should have a minimum of 34" clear width, side to side. The door needs to be a push / pull or have a latch type handle. Opening hardware needs to be centered between 30" - 44" from the floor.

 

Restroom Accessories

These are things hanging on the wall like, mirrors, soap dispensers,  paper towel dispensers or waste receptacles. There needs to be a minimum of 30" x 48" clear floor space to allow forward or parallel approach. The bottom edge of the mirror is no higher than 40" from the floor. Operable parts of fixtures need to be located no higher than 40" from the floor. Coat hooks are maximum 48" from the floor.
